Swanna Community Woodland
Swanna is unique in that it is located on an island in the middle of the River Tweed.
The island is owned by Mr Scott Watson who has entered into a 25 year management agreement with Borders Forest Trust and Kelso Community Woodland Group (KCWG).
The community group have also lead on other projects within the town, trying to preserve and enhance woodlands for local residents and the wider community.
The site is prone to flooding and so the wood is being planted with a mixture of water tolerant species such as Alder, Willow, Bird Cherry and Aspen. There are similar islands further down stream which are Sites of Special Scientific Interest and ancient woodland.
Whilst walking on the island there is a chance of seeing Barn Owls, Osprey and Otters.
Access
The island has a series of flat, informal grass paths which follow the edge of the island. To walk around the whole island is quarter of a mile.
How to reach Swanna Wood
Follow the A698 out of the town centre towards Jedbugh. After crossing the Tweed take the next right down Station Road. Then take the next immediate right down Sprouston Road. After a mile you will come to the bridge which you passed over earlier. There is provision in a lay-by for 5 cars under the bridge. Access the island across a small concrete bridge.
