Lindinny Community Woodland
Lindinny is one of seven Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS) owned woodland sites in the Tweed Valley that form part of a 25 year Agreement between FCS and Borders Forest Trust (BFT) to encourage community involvement in the restoration/ conservation of semi-natural woodlands.
The woodland is managed through a joint management board which meets on a quarterly basis and consists of representatives from FCS, BFT and the local community.
The woodland is a mixture of mature tree species with the majority being conifers. The wood is a Plantation on an Ancient Woodland site (PAWS - See below for link). It is the long term goal of the management board to restore areas of the community wood back to native species where appropriate. These areas are mainly along Shorthope Burn and its smaller tributaries.
Some thinning has been carried out near the car park and the wood has responded well with species such as honeysuckle thriving.
Although the local community is small the wood is well supported with over a thousand visitors in 2005.
Many use the Southern Upland Way but the site is also used for short walks, educational visits and events.
Access
The Southern Upland Way is the main route through the wood leaving from the car park on the A 708.
Various rides and forest tracks link to form longer routes and circular walks.
The path is good but steep in places. Views across the Tweed and Yair Valley can be enjoyed once you reach higher paths.
How to reach Lindinny Wood
Leave Selkirk on the A707 towards Peebles. After 3 miles there is a lay-by on the left with ample parking just before Yair Bridge.
