Langlee Community Woodland

The Prince's Trust Volunteers helping with tree planting

This woodland has a private landowner and is under a 25 year management agreement with Borders Forest Trust to establish native woodland with community participation.

The site is approximately 6.3 hectares and predominantly consists of newly planted (since 1997) mixed native broadleaved trees. Prior to planting the area was bare agricultural land on a south-west facing hillside enclosed by dry stone dykes. Mature ash and oak can be found along the site boundaries, juniper has been planted along path edges and some areas within the Community Woodland have large amounts of ash and gorse regeneration.

The location gives striking views over Galashiels towards Selkirk and the Southern Uplands.

To date there is no formal community woodland group for Langlee, however there is a relatively strong 'Friends of' Group for an area of SBC owned woodland adjacent to the site. With time, it is hoped that their area of interest may expand to include this piece of new woodland.

Access

There is a steep (sometimes muddy) path up to the site and then a series of informal grassed paths in the wood. Not suitable for those with limited access.

Amazing views of the Tweed Valley from the top of the wood

How to reach Glenkinnon Wood

The site can be accessed by car - driving along the A6092 from Galashiels town centre turning left at Borders College up Ellwyn Crescent for 150m then turn right up the access road to Langlee Mains Farm. 600m up this road there is a small car park on the left and a track leading to the wood. This track is steep and passes through existing woodland comprising oak, ash and to the left are some old sweet chestnut trees. Carry on along this path keeping left through the gorse until you see new planting in an open field to the left. (Grid ref NT 449364)
