Gala Policies

Pond found in the heart of Gala Policies

Gala Policies is in the heart of Galashiels. It is a mixed woodland with old oak trees, planted exotic trees such as Douglas Fir and Giant Sequoia, younger woodland trees such as willow, ash and sycamore and some shrubs including elder and rhododendron. Formally it was the designed grounds of the former New Gala House. There are paths, a pond, a stream and some benches. To ensure the future of the Gala Policies, The friends of Gala Policies group was formed. The group work with the local authority with regular meetings to carry out a management strategy. There are Clean-ups and a Wildlife club for children aged 8-12 - Gala WATCH club.

Access

A network of paths and woodland access through Gala Policies allows some access for people walking, cycling etc. Paths include a section of the Southern Upland Way. There are also sections of well surfaced level paths suitable for people of limited mobility and wheelchair users.

The Southern Upland Way path is surfaced with woodchips, which in this location forms a hard level surface to the pond. Boardwalk around the pond to grass area. Some Bench seats. Grass area soft and muddy after wet weather. The grass is a hard surface after long period of dry weather. Main Drive footpath is hard path with gentle slopes through the woodland to area of old Oak Trees.
