Eyemouth Community Woodland

Queen's Road Wood with the Harbour below

The Eyecatcher group were constituted in 2000 and their objective is to "Make Eyemouth and its surrounding area, a clean and beautiful place, that everyone can contribute to and be proud of".

As part of this objective the group jointly manage Eyemouth Community Woodlands in partnership with Borders Forest Trust. The four woods found within the town of Eyemouth are owned by the Scottish Borders Council and are managed through a 25 year agreement.

The largest of the woods, Gunsgreenhill Wood is a newly planted site (2001). As part of the walk through the wood, an oak avenue has been planted with 129 trees commemorating sailors who died during the 1881 Black Friday fishing disaster. The avenue leads to the top of the wood and some of the best views of the town and the sea beyond.

Access

There are various routes linking the woods. Most are informal grass paths with some Tarmac sections leading to Eyemouth Golf Club. Gunsgreenhill Wood joins the Berwickshire Coast Path which runs from Berwick to Coldingham.

The management group are currently working on improving and creating new links between woodlands with formal signage and way markers.

How to reach Eyemouth Woods

Gunsgreenhill can be reached by following the B1107 towards Eyemouth from the A1. After 2 km a roundabout is reached. The 2nd exit is a proposed access site which is not yet in use and is suitable for parking. From this point cross the road which leads to the golf course, through a fence and a grass path leads up the hill.
