Eshiels Community Woodland
Eshiels woodlands are situated along the River Tweed two miles outside of Peebles. The woodland is made up of three small areas which are owned by Scottish Borders Council and the Forestry Commission. All are managed by the local community and Borders Forest Trust through a 25 year management agreement. The three woods link together to make up a mile long strip of woodland which follows the River Tweed.
The woodland is a mixture of newly planted and mature trees. Various training events are held in the woodland and local schools use the site as part of an outdoor education programme. The Princes Trust has been involved in many improvement projects helping to construct path links and improving access.
Access
The woods are linked via the old Peebles railway line which is now disused. You can walk along the line or follow an informal way marked route through the wood.
How to reach Esheils Wood
Take the A72 out of Peebles and go past Janet's Brae wood on your left. Take the next right and follow the road for 40m until you reach a small lay-by on your right.
Access road works for the new recycling centre are currently disrupting the immediate area of woodland. To avoid this, walk back to the A72 and turn left, follow the pavement until you reach a signed access point which will lead you towards the other areas of woodland.
