Darnick Community Woodland

Darnick Pic 1

The woodland covers a total area of seven and a half acres and is divided into two woods by one of the local roads, Broomilees Road, which runs through from the village. The woods are called "Shunters Wud" and "Wee Shunters Wud", as a reminder of the original use of the ground on which the woods now stand. Opened in 1849, The Border Union Railway, which operated between Galashiels and Hawick, ran past this part of the village. The line became known as the famous Waverley Route. The Darnick sidings were closed in 1969 and the railway cuttings were filled in with spoil, as part of the new road system, forming two council-owned fields. These later became the site for Darnick Community Woodland through the signing of an agreement with the council. A management group were set up and the first planting took place on 14 February 1998. The woodland is relatively recent and is planted with solely native tree species. The wood is fully organic with the group opting not to use any form of chemicals within the woodland.

Access

There is a good path network throughout both woods on sound level ground. Good views of the Eildons can be seen while walking around the woodland.
