A Community Woodland is a woodland for people. Community woodlands are managed, cared for and used by the local community, and are generally supported by a Community Woodland Group. They can be owned or leased, or managed in partnership with another organisation. Community woodlands cover all woodland types, range in size, can be found in both town centres and remote countryside and vary in community involvement.

Borders Community Woodland Forum evolved from a local community woodland conference co-ordinated by Borders Forest Trust in May 2003. Eleven community woodland groups of the Borders agreed there was the need to establish a Borders Community Woodland Forum which would:

  • Improve networking and communications between groups and organisations
  • Share existing resources between groups
  • Exchange knowledge and skills between community woodlands
  • Develop partnership and funding proposals
  • Provide training for Forum members
  • Disseminate information about community woodlands to a wider audience
